The hot trends at the moment are shoulder dresses, clothing in the colour yellow and jungle print outfits. To be honest though as much as there are trends around, it is best to stick to what suits you and makes you feel comfortable. There's nothing worse than following a trend that makes you feel/look awkward. I love dresses, ones which make statements means that you don't need to worry about accessorising!
I love the style of Cameron Diaz. She has an amazing figure, and wears fantastic clothes and shoes. She is able to carry off the casual look as well as shine on the red carpet. I also am fascinated by Cheryl Cole; the girl can seemingly do no wrong! Everyone has their fair share of style disasters, and so I think it would be cruel to single out any one
particular celeb for getting it wrong!
I am someone who enjoys exercise. I find it hard to commit to regular classes due to work, likewise team activities are tough because I may have to cancel at short notice. I recently ran the London marathon and now have the 'running bug'! It keeps you fit and your muscles lean. It's an all-over body workout that you can do anywhere and also it’s free so you don't have to join a gym! When I have some spare time, I do like to book in for show-jumping lessons. I learnt to horse ride properly on BBC1 a few years ago for sport relief's 'Only Fools and Horses' and have to say that not only do I love it but it's also great for toning!!
I tend not to overload on accessories in summer but they can transform an outfit from day to night. I keep it simple, with a bangle or occasionally a necklace. My favourite accessories are handbags, this season I've invested in an amazing gold bag with leather fringing. It's very daring but I love it and it goes with everything!
On a first date, I would avoid going too overdressed, you're going on a date not to a ball! However, don't be too scruffy as you want the guy to see that you think he's worth a bit of an effort! I also would avoid plastering on too much makeup, as it can be a real turnoff for some men....especially if your eyeliner starts to melt under your eyes, giving that panda look! Not ideal! My tip would be jeans and a smart top or a simple dress with some killer heels!
Boring and predictable as it may sound my suggestion would be to cleanse, tone and moisturise every morning and night. It's worth it to keep your skin looking good. I also lather my body in moisturiser twice a day-it's just part of my routine-I hate having dry skin. I use a mix of Skin Nutrition and Bobbi Brown face products, and Palmers and Elemis body products.
I think that as long as your hair and skin are in good condition, then most of us can mix and match clothes from previous seasons. I would say visit your hairdresser regularly, to make sure that your hair is shiny and split-end free. I have been going to Mahogany for years- they're great, I see Colin and Vivica- they know just what to do and I don't even have to ask! Also maintain your beauty regime to try and keep your skin fresh.
With regard to your wardrobe, adapt pieces from the back of your wardrobe with accessories, so they work this season. After all, if anyone asks, instead of saying, 'it's a couple of years old', you can just reply, 'it's vintage'! That's what I do! I've recently started raiding my mum's wardrobe for old jewelry, belts and bags. She has a brilliant collection from the 70s and 80s that she never uses!!
The high street has some amazing clothes, what's more they copy designer trends so well that you can have a catwalk look for a fraction of the price. Warehouse, M&S and Top Shop, have great pieces at a low price, whilst if you can stretch a bit further Reiss, Karen Millen, French Connection and Jaeger have incredible collections this summer. I try to find pieces that suit me as opposed to being a sheep and following the latest trend, after all it may not work for me. My staple buys so far have included a maxi dress from Jaeger which is perfect for events all summer, as well as some colourful, frilled, silk tops from Reiss which will work with jeans and skirts. I also have purchased one shouldered, fitted Warehouse dress-affordable and perfect for a night out here or on holiday. I have some good sandals from Faith that I can wear every day as well as some beautiful pink and cream stilettos from Reiss.
Wear black!! I have a black skirt I bought from Zara 8 years ago. It's simple and can be worn with a belt. I wear it with black best tops, cardigans, and long sleeved tops. No-one would ever know how old it is- it's a staple piece that can be smart or casual, worn on flights, out for dinner, or to events....I can't imagine not having it in my wardrobe!!!
My fashion essentials are a great pair of jeans. I live in my Rock & Republic jeans. They are fitted and low rise, I love them! They're also long in the leg which is perfect for me as I'm 5'9" and when I wear heels they remain a good length. I also would say a good cardigan. I have one from French Connection. It's perfect in summer for cooler evenings and can be folded into your bag easily.
My beauty tip is to always wear SPF. It's not worth getting burnt as it's painful, dangerous and leaves hideous strap marks! Invest in a good face sun-cream; it's less greasy than body ones. I like Bobbi Brown moisturisers with SPF in them. You could also get a parasol to avoid burning on hot days. There are some pretty cool ones out there, like the one from Antoni and Alison. On hot days, you sometimes do need some shade for relief and this will give you that without losing the style element!!
My style is really inspired by my own confidence and comfort. On days when I feel more at ease in my body, I may wear tighter, sexier clothes and be more relaxed in what I wear. On days when I feel less happy with the way I look, I wear plainer, simpler clothes. I say dress how you feel not how fashion magazines tell you to. You can be inspired by what they say or see pieces in fashion pages that appeal to you, but by not recreating the entire look you are not committing a fashion faux-pas, rather you are dressing for yourself. Comfort and confidence is the key!
